Choosing to obey or rebel depends on the existing circumstance. Most, if not all societies have brought up their children to obey their parents, teachers, bosses and most of all to obey God. Anyone with good morals and looking to get along with everyone knows the value of obedience; it enhances good living and trust among people. Rebellion on the other hand is the opposite of adhering to what is expected. Does rebellion necessarily mean that one lacks good morals? No, the act of rebellion can be forced onto a person if the situation at the moment calls for it. Obedience is a characteristic naturally found in man, the act of choosing to obey or rebel lies solely on the circumstance at the moment.
Rebellion is in some sorts, defiance to a social practice like respecting higher power despite their questionable attributes. Not all kinds of rebellion can be regarded as lawful misconduct, rebellion to some situations have no legal consequences as it is a case of personal choice. Obedience has its positive and negative, when there is obedience to a higher authority that allows smooth running, then rebellion is critical in this circumstance as it prevents authoritarian relationships from developing. Rebellion to most people is a kind of protest that undermines authority but it sure does play a critical role in safeguarding the community against authoritarian policies. People should be responsible for the society they live in by recognizing when to obey and when to rebel. Individualistic people tend to take advantage of others under the name obedience, their power that demands obedience, can lead others to indulge in things they should not be doing. In support of this, Jackson states that “Some of you fellows want to give me a hand?”, there was hesitation before two men”. Many people believe that rebellion or disobedience has to be ignorant; on the contrary rebellion can be life affirming rather than destructive. Chaos and confusion will always be present if there are no laws and authority in a particular setting. For a place to thrive people need to adhere to laws but not obey as a means of survival, the set rules should be designed for harmonized living, not for forceful living .History demonstrates a lot on the levels of obedience, the obedience of slaves to their masters led them to staying oppressed, rebellion did not make it any better but it did prove that the slaves knew their rights at the time.
Another argument as to why rebellion is necessary in certain situations is the case of some ethnic, religious and political groups. People tend to obey and commit to groups whose values and norms are despicable, if the ways of a group or political party do not please you and the community as a whole then rebellion comes into play, one does not have to go up in arms to protest, simply saying no and refusing to commit is enough rebellion. Women are sometimes called the weaker gender, and that they should not go to work, their place is the home where they should clean and cook for their husbands. Husbands who are controlling and force the wives to conform to their notions are examples of why one can be forced to rebel. A woman should not obey someone who diminishes her, we are living in a modern society where women work their way up to success and still do their home duties. Obedience in such a case can bring about detrimental impacts on the relationship.
Obedience where there are laws and authority yields productiveness and rebellion leads to devastation. People working in an office are required to be punctual and meet their deadlines on time, most of them do not obey any of these laws simply because they justify that the boss is bad or they are being paid minimum wages. Rebellion in this case is uncalled for and can lead one to losing a job. Obedience to things such as traffic laws is necessary; rebelling to such can cause accidents, an unnecessary issue that could have been avoided by obeying simple rules. Since it is natural to obey or rebel there are adults and children who ignorantly rebel against everything just to satisfy their selfish needs to be repulsive. Obeying can be classified under the rules of life, children should obey their parents as they know what is right for them. Man cannot live alone, the dependence on others and force him to obey traditions, religions, conventions and rules. Oppression should however be unacceptable, if there is no justice then rebellion is necessary in pursuit for justice and right of law.
The choices one makes in regards to obeying or disobeying contribute to the consequences that take place. Obedience is important if one requires living in harmony with others under laws and authority. Rebelling towards the same laws and authorities if they are not legally fair is a personal choice but it goes a long way in shaping how an individual is treated by those in higher positions. One should never be obligated to obey what they displease; it is an attribute of choice. When rebellion is necessary and it is not out of ignorance, one can explain it to the people involved for justification.
